Choosing the right model

Like any new piece of furniture, your fire must fit in with the room, your personal tastes and preferred level of comfort.

Decorative Flame

Decorative Flame Fire

If your room needs a distinctive finishing touch that will give it a warm and inviting ambience, but you don't need another serious heat source, a Decorative Flame Gas Fire is the answer. These fires provide all the authentic glow of coals and leaping flames, but because the radiant heat output is low, it won't send temperatures soaring.

The design features traditional fire baskets with logs or coals. Fitting is simple provided you have an adequate sized fireplace and a non-combustion hearth. You will require an open flue with a minimum diameter of 175mm (a conventional 9" x 9" brick-built chimney is suitable). Adequate permanent ventilation is also a must - usually an air grill of at least 100cm2.

No Chimney Gas Fires

No Chimney Gas Fire

All the beauty of a real gas fire, and you don't need a chimney to install one. These appliances have either a fan flue or a balanced flue, and are fitted through a suitable external wall with the outside terminal close coupled to the fire, which is installed on the interior surface.

The fire may be surface fitted or recessed into the inner leaf of the cavity wall. If surface fitting, you will need a special deep fire surround or to build a 'dummy' chimney breast to accomodate the depth of the fire and to create that genuine fireplace 'hearth' look.

Inset Gas Fires

Inset Gas Fire

Inset Gas Fires are usually fully recessed into a fire opening and simulate a real coal fire with dancing flames. They fit flush into most fireplaces and come in a wide variety of designs to suit virtually any decor.

Inset gas fires require a natural draft flue or chimney. Some models need a specific flue type, but this will be stated in the applicance specifications.

These fires can provide radiant or convected heat, or a combinaiton. Models with glass fronts are more efficinet. Radiant heat models incorporate a heat exchanger that makes the total heat output higher than non-inset gas fires.

Free Standing Live Flame Effect Gas Fires

Make a dramatic design statment with these modern designs. Ideal for open plan, or any setting, these appliances sit on a hearth and project into the room. The designs are hard to tell apart from real fires, thanks to details like cases or baskets for traditional character. A simulated coal or log fuel bed with flickering flames is visible through a glass panel.

Heat output is excellent and can provide the main heat source in the room. Models with heat exchangers are especially effective room heaters. These fires are suitable for most flue types, including prefabricated block flue systems and balanced flues where there is no existing chimney.
