CALOR AT HOME
Energy Saving Tips
As a clean burning fuel Calor Liquefied Petroleum Gas is an environmentally sustainable alternative to other fuels, as LPG has significantly lower CO2 emissions than heating oil, coal, peat and electricity.
We can protect our environment by reducing the amount of fuel we use and at the same time reducing our heating bills, this can be achieved by insulating our homes and operating our heating systems moreefficiently.
In order to achieve this we have outlined some of the measures you can take in your own home.
Installing a condensing boiler
A high efficiency condensing boiler works on the principle of recovering the waste heat which is normally rejected to the atmosphere from the flue of a conventional (non-condensing) boiler.
High efficiency condensing boilers convert more than 88% of their fuel into heat, compared to 78% for conventional types.
Insulation
As much as one quarter of the heat lost from a house can be lost through the walls. Properly insulating walls can reduce this by two-thirds!
Without attic insulation you could be losing as much as 15% of your heating costs through your roof. Insulating your attic is a simple and effective way to reduce your heating bills and you can even do it yourself. The costs of installing or upgrading your attic insulation could be repaid in energy savings in 1 to 6 years. | ![]() |
A lagging jacket on the hot water cylinder will keep water hotter for longer and pay for itself within a few months.
Badly fitting windows and external doors can account for more than one-sixth of heat loss. Using draught excluders is a great way to minimise this problem. | ![]() |
Controls
Installing an effective control system for your central heating system means that you will use your gas more efficiently.
Zoning allows you to divide your home into two or three zones. As each room or floor in your home may have unique heating and cooling needs trying to manage the temperature throughout your whole house with one thermostat is difficult.
Programmers allow you to set 'On' and 'Off' time preiods. Some models switch the central heating and domestic hot water on and off at the same time, while others allow the domestic hot water and heating to come on and go off at different times.
A room thermostat simply switches the heating system on and off as necessary. It works by sensing the air temperature, switching on the heating when the air temperature falls below the thermostat setting and switching it off once this set temperature has been reached.
Reducing your thermostat by 10C can cut up to 10% off heating bills and save energy.
Energy Saving Light Bulbs
CFL light bulbs and LED bulbs use one-fifth of the energy and last ten times longer than conventional bulbs.
Windows and Doors
The sealant around doors and windows is subject to wear and tear, check that your windows and doors are tightly sealed, if not , the sealant may need replacing.
